San Francisco plans to reach its renewable energy goal by 100 percent in 2020, through requiring new buildings of 10 stories or less to have solar panels installed. All new buildings will have to mount either a rooftop solar PV or solar panels. This bill is just an extension of one of California’s laws. An already established California law requires for all new buildings to have part of their roof readily available for solar. In other words, there should be 250-square-feet of the roof that is free of any shading. The new law is set to become effective in January 2017. The legislation declares that the requirement is essential because of its location and rising sea level.
