Senegalese-American singer Akon is known for his musical talent, but the artist is also becoming a leader in the movement to bring electricity to rural Africa. The singer established the foundation, Akon Lighting Africa to provide the continent with electricity through clean and affordable solar energy. This project will give 600 million people electricity.

The foundation has become more than just a movement for electricity in Africa, it is also investing in a solar energy work force to create jobs. Akon seeks to make this movement even more successful by not just investing in clean energy, but also investing in human capital. By training a new generation of highly qualified African engineers, technicians and entrepreneurs Africa can accelerate the transformation process. The job-training solar academy will be located in Bamako, Mali.

The company has already begun installing street lights and small household solar systems in 14 countries.
